How to distinguish between silicone and PVC, where is the difference in product quality?

PVC products:

The full name of PVC products is polyvinyl chloride. It is mainly a polymer formed by the polymerization of compounds such as vinyl chloride monomer and azo compounds under high temperature. PVC materials can be synthesized into different types of products through polymer synthesis, and Both PVC gifts and silicone gifts are relatively common gifts in the market. PVC materials are mainly white powdery amorphous substances with a density of about 1.3-1.5. The vitrification of the material is within 90 degrees, and the maximum temperature resistance is 170 degrees. Left and right, the temperature resistance effect is low, and it will automatically decompose into hydrogen chloride under high temperature conditions, and it will automatically catalyze and decompose if it exceeds the temperature resistance range.

Conventional PVC identification methods are generally classified into the following three categories, namely:

(1) Identification by combustion method:

Softening or melting temperature range: 75~90°C;

Combustion: Self-extinguishing after ignition;

Combustion flame state: yellow at the top and green at the bottom with smoke; situation after leaving the fire: extinguished after leaving the fire; smell: pungent sour.

This method is the most convenient and direct, generally as the first choice.

(2) Identification of solvent treatment:

Solvents: tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexanone, ketone, dimethylformamide;

Non-solvents: methanol, acetone, heptane.

By adding the suspected PVC plastic to the above solvents and observing the dissolution of the plastic, it can be judged whether it is PVC. After the solvent is heated, the dissolution effect will be more obvious.

It is almost difficult to identify the difference between PVC products and silicone products from the hands of consumers, and some of them stand out:
1. Texture

There is a big difference between silicone and PVC. The silicone material will have a good meaty feel when touched by hand, and it will not appear old-fashioned. The fineness of the material is better than that of PVC material, while the texture of PVC will have a slightly rough feeling. Soft and smooth without silicone.

2. Color

There is basically no difference in color between the newly produced silicone products and PVC products, but over time after long-term use, PVC materials will appear sticky, discolored and yellowed, especially in light and heat environments, while silicone materials are rare This kind of situation occurs, but some materials also appear yellowing.

3. Hardness

In terms of hardness, the hardness of silica gel can be between 30-90, while the conventional hardness of PVC is between 50-95. Relatively speaking, the hardness of silica gel material can be lower and softer, while PVC material cannot reach the hardness of silica gel. The difference in softness and hardness is that the harder the silicone, the better the rebound strength, while the PVC has a poor rebound strength.

4. Temperature

The difference in temperature effect is that the effect of silicone material is better. The processing temperature of silicone rubber processing manufacturers is about 180 degrees in the production process, and the normal temperature resistance effect is about -40 to 230 degrees, while the softening or melting temperature range of PVC: 75 ~90 degrees, there will be a certain chemical reaction when the temperature exceeds the temperature. Silicone will turn white and burn, and PVC will soften and extinguish after fire; Odor: pungent sour.

5. Rebound

In terms of products, the rebound strength is the most important difference between the two materials. Because the silicone material has good silicon molecular connection strength, its rebound strength is relatively much better, and the PVC material has a large polydispersity. The rebound effect is naturally not as prominent as the silicone material.
